Fernando Gonzalez retires after match @ Sony Ericsson Open

March 21, 2012 was the date for the last match to be played by Fernando Gonzalez as a professional tennis player. He lost to Nicolas Mahut (famous contender in the all-time longest tennis match) in a thrilling 3 set night match that could only be ended in a tiebreaker. It’s a fitting way for him to finish amongst so many latin american fans, though all would prefer to see him retire on a big win. The tournament itself has made a beautiful effort to honor the enthusiasm and level of play he’s brought to the game over the years. You can read more about last night’s match here (http://www.sonyericssonopen.com/News/Tennis/2012/Tournament/Wednesday/Miami-Wednesday-Gonzalez-Plays-Final-Match.aspx) or watch the video tribute that was aired after the match above.

Tennis is only just getting started on Key Biscayne, so be sure not to miss it!
