Brickell (and greater Miami) natives know what the next two weeks are about: Tennis. The Sony Ericsson Open (or the Lipton, as I still think of it) starts its qualifying rounds today at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne. For the next two weeks, traffic on the Rickenbacker Causeway will packed all the way down to US1 and beyond, but the agonizing gridlock will be worth it once you get to the tournament grounds.
I won’t go into details about the awesomeness of the tournament, or write a grand overview. This is just a reminder: the world’s best tennis descends on Key Biscayne, and you shouldn’t allow yourself to miss all the fun. That’s right: fun. Players and fans alike prefer this tournament above all others because of the location as well as the on-site amenities and events. Fans can actually bar hop along the food courts without watching a single point on court, because the nightlife is as vivid here as anywhere in the city.
If you don’t believe me, you should stop by tonight’s event right here in Brickell’s own Segafredo, where the tournament will be throwing a retirement party for Fernando Gonzalez, the famous Chilean player who has chosen to make this tournament his last ever. One can’t help but feel like he’ll be missed on the tour. Though he had no Grand Slam championships under his belt, he was always among the most exciting and competitive players to watch. He also attracted the enthusiastic Chilean fans everywhere he went (you may have heard “CHI-CHI-CHI! LE-LE-LE! VI-VA CHILE!” at any one of his matches). He’ll be answering questions @SEOpen today as well starting at 12:30 PM, for the twitterati out there, and will likely be highlighted as he makes his way through the tournament.
For all of you in and around Brickell, Adidas will be sponsoring his retirement party at Segafredo’s tonight at 8 PM. Be sure to check out the flyer, and stop by to have a drink, wish Fernando well, and perhaps even snag a photo or autograph with the Chilean sensation!
